Hypnosis: Change the small things.
I’m glad things have changed since I was a full time teacher. When I was teaching full time as an English teacher during the days of coursework, we were told that the student’s work could be changed or re-drafted. Unfortunately, this lead to really torturous weeks where students would be re-writing their work on Shakespeare over and over again, looking at what others had done and copying it out until they hit the ‘correct’ mark criteria; like writing by numbers.
Stop re-writing the same old story
There was often so much re-writing the students had forgotten why they were doing the work in the first place; I lost count of how many versions of ‘Macbeath on the Heath’ I marked – just a little extra focus on the fact it was Macbeth and not Macbeath and the fact it was a play and not a ‘movie’ could have improved the final grade…..
I think we all became immune to it in the end. I think that may be one of the reasons coursework was scrapped; there were no more ‘honest’ responses, just a tired formula for ‘getting a pass’. Those students who changed their whole approach to their studies also changed their work, they took ownership. Those who were not invested in their work were waiting in the hope that someone else would do it for them. If only they had focussed their attention to making small changes.
Looking back, it reminds me of when we want to make a change to our behaviours in our life but don’t know how or where to start with that change – we look at what others are doing and we think there’s some kind of formula – if we keep doing the same thing over again and improve it, it will get better. In my experience, that doesn’t work. We need to really focus in on what it is we want to change; start with the smallest things and work upward from that point: taking ownership of our decisions.
Theory of stupidity
I think it was Einstein that said the theory of stupidity was doing the same thing over and over expecting to get a different result, or some such thought. That’s my point really: having the same thoughts over and over again and expecting a different way of thinking to emerge? Or doing the same soul destroying job over and over again, sticking with the same unhealthy habits or even staying in a relationship with the same patterns of abuse and expecting things to change is futile.
Things only change if you do.
As Shakespeare said ‘here’s the rub’. We can ask other people to change, to do things differently again and again but in the end, unless they invest in the change themselves, nothing will happen and old patterns will emerge.
If it’s Possible in the world, it’s Possible for me
Just as we can’t rely on other people to change their behaviours, neither can we rely on others to put in to action our own dreams and plans.
We must take ownership of our own dreams; we must take action: even the smallest of actions can take us to the next point: the smallest of actions are surely possible? It really doesn’t have to be difficult to get the change we seek; change in an inside job.
Small tweaks may be frustrating but remember how far you have come on your path. Remember how much you can take control of; you are not your thoughts, changing the small things really can make a difference.
Can Hypnotherapy help?
One of the things that hypnotherapy does really well is provide a space for our minds to really focus in on the small things, to become absorbed in the inside world to the extent that the outside world fade away…in this ‘safe place’ your unconscious can decide the little things that need to change and those that it can safely let go of and make peace with. In this way the mind is clearer and changes can occur naturally. I am always amazed at how quickly clients make changes with ease. Hypnotherapy is the most powerful therapy I have experienced and it works.
