It seems that more and more of us are looking for ways in which to ‘manage’ our thoughts – last week alone I had several clients who said that their bad or negative thoughts were taking over!
Well…what if we didn’t give our thoughts any attention? What if we treated thoughts as neutral, neither good nor bad thoughts? In truth they are just thoughts.
Now if you are struggling with this concept I totally understand – It certainly took me a little while before I could let go of the judgemental self or my ego telling me that I had to pay attention to the self sabotage (turns out my self sabotage voice is only 11 years old…more on that later!) Once I began to recognise those old negative thoughts as just out dated patterns, I was able to ignore them for longer and longer until in the end they faded away to make way for new creative thoughts and ideas – ones that I liked and ones that were useful to me!
In fact over the years I have become to understand Mindfulness as something I am not something I do – being in the moment rather than lost in my thoughts. Mindfulness practice has shown me that I am NOT my thoughts, I am the one who is actually doing the thinking, therefore how can thoughts control me? When we realise we are not victims to our thinking and there are ways that we can notice thought without DOING anything to it, we can relax and notice that in ‘being’ we are just present.
You don’t have to ‘put time aside’ for Mindfulness, you don’t have to go to a class, you don’t have to become a different person, it’s just a choice, moment by moment.
If you’re the curious sort and would like to find out more about Mindfulness and where to begin, get in touch, there are more classes coming in May, If you sign up to my newsletter, I can keep you informed; I will also send you a calming Meditation track for free and a little e-book on 5 ways to stop fighting your thoughts in 5 minutes!
