“Weird isn’t it…..?” The third client this week tells me that she has been away on holiday and eaten all kinds of ‘naughty things’ (I will get to this later) and only put a pound on or …even more weird(ly) has LOST weight!
Get out of town! No. Literally, get out of town and get away and see what happens to your weight when you are having too much fun to really care!
You see, odd as it seems, when we go away, we find time to regulate our eating patterns: we are less likely to be running around or stressed. We find time for ‘breakfast’ even it if is half lunch half breakfast…we find time to eat. We may go to a small cafe and order a breakfast, taking our time, looking at the beach or passers by. We may have a conversation or two or just sit mindfully…and here’s the key. Mindfully.
The top tips I give my clients are as follows: chew each mouthful, really taste your food, slow down, put down your fork between mouthfuls (skinny folk do this, watch them!) eat with your mindful, be aware of the energy your food is giving you – is it good food with good energy sources? Is it refined sugary stodge?
On holiday we are more likely to be doing activities that please us – walking around, swimming, water sports, horse riding, paragliding or just plain shopping. Adding movement to your holiday aids metabolic rate – add meals that are mainly salad and grilled meats with plenty of water to quench our thirst and you have a recipe for successful weight loss right there!
Even if you are not a ‘breakfast’ person, you can still enjoy healthy eating at regular times thus signalling to your body that there’s plenty of food so you are not going to go hungry.
Oh and that word ‘naughty’…food is not naughty..or nice. It’s just food. We don’t need to talk to ourselves like a 6 year old. Cake is just cake, eat it an enjoy it if you want it. You may just want to share a piece, you may just want to ‘taste’ it; for goodness sake stop telling yourself food is ‘naughty’. Just eat it, if you really want it, just do it slowly.
The good news is, you don’t even need to go away on holiday to enjoy mindful eating! At home you will find that when you give yourself permission to relax and enjoy each day mindfully that your eating patterns will naturally fall to when you feel naturally hungry – there’s no rush to cram things in. You take your time and meander through the day if you need to…..body will thank you for the extra walk with the dog, now you have time. Or that swim with the kids or grand kids…now you have time.
Finding time for you is the best thing you can do to help your weight settle and drop those pounds – be mindful, enjoy your time eating nourishing food, making a great salad or cooking up a meal for the family to enjoy. Put down your fork…take in the sights…even if you are just looking out of your kitchen window – notice what you notice. Lose yourself in the moment.
Taste it slowly and enjoy it…..then watch the pounds fall away.
